Health Coaches Need to Look After Themselves Too

If charity begins at home then so does self care.

Taking care of ourselves is really important, we all teach our clients to do better at this, but what about us?

  • What do you do for self care?

  • How’s your stress management?

  • Your diet?

Most of the time we do pretty well, us coaches, at looking after ourselves to a fairly high degree. We’re lucky, because it’s not a chore for us, we WANT to. Most of the time anyway.

Sometimes though….we get busy. Which is a good thing, especially if we’re busy with clients. But it’s still busy. And we can fall into those usual traps; skipping meals, eating on the go, grabbing something from the store, you know the one, the NOT Wholefoods one, Starbucks maybe! Yes coffee becomes our friend, chocolate (duh) and we run out of time to exercise the way we want to, or to meditate - the very things we know keep us grounded and vibrant and onto it, are the things that slip away right when we need them.

And then we make it worse by beating ourselves up about it! I mean we’re supposed to be better than that right? How can we coach people to get this stuff right if we can’t do it ourselves! Ugh I can hear the self talk now prattling on - yada yada mean stuff, yada you’re not good enough, yada why can’t you be perfect yada blah.

The thing is we’re not perfect, no-one is, perfect doesn’t really exist. What we are is human, flawed, doing the best we can with what we’ve got.

And what we’ve got is a pretty crap food supply, where food-ish substances are everywhere, actual food is scarce and harder to come by, genetic modification, Glyphosate, poor soils, early harvesting, shipping and storage all lead to malnourished low quality foods even when we try to make better choices, which some of the time we fail to do because - oh yeah - WE’RE BUSY!

Long hours, high stress, marketing, clients, need for more clients, bills, - you know. And sure there’s bits of joy in there, like loved ones and those really rewarding clients who have breakthroughs and TELL you about them, but sometimes it’s just stress and the mountain of things we need to do before friday.

  • So how do you take care of you?
  • Do you have rituals, stress management tools in your tool box, ways to release and let go?
  • How’s your time management these days?
  • Are YOU still even on your list of people to take care of these days?

How’s your diet?

I’m a big believer that most of us are not these days, even when our diet is organic - unless you’re growing healthy soil, the nutrients aren’t in the soil, the health and immunity isn’t there and in that case it ain’t in the plant either. GMOs and Glyphosate are harming our digestive systems, flattening villi, causing leaky gut, disrupting the delicate balance of the good and bad bacteria in our microbiome.

Are you getting enough nutrients?

And the gut is the center of everything, it’s where dis-ease begins and it’s where good health can flourish. Immunity, neurotransmitters, the feeling brain, it’s all in your gut. Sometimes I feel like, because we do this for a living, we’re too “in it” to see that we too have brain fog, low energy, crashes and mood swings. It’s all so systemic it seems ‘normal’ and besides, we eat well so it can’t possibly be diet or lifestyle.

But the fact of the matter is our world changed really fast, and it’s having a huge impact on our health. Even if you eat organic you are still most likely being exposed to Glyphosate, and paints and plastics off gassing, and man it’s hard to shop for things that don’t have canola oil in them or some other GMO corn/soy derivative. And we’re not perfect all the time.

We’re busy and tired and human just like everyone else.

We need tools!

Just like everyone else. I think, as a coach, I can’t just tell my client what to do, or even how to do it, I have to give them TOOLS, resources that make it easy for them to do it, because life went and got a bit cray cray!

  • How do you recognise when you’re out of whack?
  • What do you personally do to keep connected to your own sense of wellness?
  • How do you know if you’re so ‘off’ you can’t tell you’re ‘off’?

Sometimes we have to shift our focus, change our perspective, look at things from a different point of view. Like going away on holiday, a change of scene and you suddenly can see problems and solutions you couldn’t see before.

When was the last time you did a really good cleanse? Have you gone non GMO? Do you think you should? How are you going to do that?

What are things you know you need to be doing to take better care of YOU? Why aren’t you doing those? What’s getting in your way? How can you get it OUT of your way?

Do you eat enough green things, is sugar slipping in? Does your gut need some healing? Do you have a source of awesomeness that helps you do that? Like really do it? Can you get the Glyphosate out?

When did you last give yourself a hug or a pat on the back? When did you last celebrate a small success, achieving a small goal not just the big ones?

I’m sending you hoorahs and calls of “YOU ROCK you spectacular, saucy piece of awesomeness”.

Please take care of you, the world needs you.
